The
French Republic Jules Grevy Vanity Fair July 12, 1879 This is a reproduction of the Spy print from Vanity Fair.
Newspaper clipping
The Referee - 9th February 1879
M. Jules Grévy, the new President [of France] is a splendid fellow, and
about the last man in the world I should once have dreamed about spotting
for the Presidential Stakes. He has very little of the Frenchman about him,
wears his whiskers closely clipped and his head bald in front, and shaves
his upper lip and chin after the British banker fashion. He has a look of
conscious power on his face, and generally smokes a pipe.
He is a splendid sportsman, and next to Paul de Cassagnac, is perhaps the
best amateur billiard players in Paris. I don't know how he will attire
himself on festive state occasions, but his ordinary garb is a tweed suit
and a billycock, and his favourite oath is "sac à papier !". The last time I
had the pleasure of meeting M. Grévy in Paris was at the Café de Mulhouse, a
well-known billiard house on the Boulevards, where gentlemen affecting long
clay pipes can indulge their weakness.
Requires no framing and is ready to hang. Back has key hole for easy
hanging.
Picture is mounted on an black ultra gloss plaque, 7" x 9" and 5/8"
thick MDF base with Chamfer Edges. Picture is printed on a raised high
gloss 5" x 7" x Aluminum Face.
